How to Check Your Jetter Hose: A Quick Guide for Plumbers and Drainers

Your water jetter is one of the hardest-working machines on the truck, but it’s only as good as the hose attached to it. A worn jetter hose can cost you cleaning power, time on site and, in the worst case, the safety of your crew.

A regular jetter hose inspection takes just a few minutes. Here’s what to look for, how often to check, and when it’s time for a replacement.

Why your jetter hose matters

A high pressure jetter hose carries water at serious pressure on every job. It gets dragged through drains and sewers, pulled over concrete and kerbs, and wound on and off the reel again and again. Over time, all of that wear adds up.

A damaged hose doesn’t just perform worse. If it fails under pressure, it can burst or whip without warning, putting your operator, your customer and anyone nearby at risk. Checking your hose regularly is one of the simplest ways to keep your water jetter running safely and at full power.

How often should you check your jetter hose?

Give your drain jetter hose a quick visual check before each job, and a more thorough inspection every few months. How long a hose lasts depends on how often you jet, the pipes you work in and how the hose is handled and stored.

As a rule of thumb:

  • Around 6 to 8 months: inspect the full length closely, especially if your jetter is used daily.
  • Over 12 months: pay extra attention to the hose and plan for a replacement if wear is showing.

Always follow your manufacturer’s guidance for inspection and replacement intervals.

What to look for: your jetter hose checklist

Run the full length of the hose through your hands (wearing gloves) and check for:

  • Worn or scuffed outer cover, particularly in the first few metres closest to the nozzle, which take the most punishment
  • Exposed or frayed braiding, a clear sign the hose is no longer safe to run
  • Bulges, blisters or soft spots, which point to weakness under pressure
  • Kinks, flat spots or crushed sections
  • Cracks or cuts in the cover
  • Leaks or movement at the fittings
  • Reduced length, if the hose has been cut back and re-terminated a few times

If you spot exposed braiding, bulges or leaking fittings, take the hose out of service straight away and replace it before your next job.

Tips to extend the life of your jetter hose

A few simple habits can help your sewer jetter hose last longer:

  • Use a hose guide or leader at the pipe entry to reduce wear on the cover.
  • Avoid sharp edges and dragging the hose over rough surfaces where you can.
  • Release pressure before winding the hose back onto the reel.
  • Store it out of direct sunlight when not in use.
  • Flush and clean the hose after jobs in heavy grease or debris.

Why it pays to keep a spare jetter hose

Even a well-maintained hose can be damaged on a tough job. Keeping a spare roll of replacement jetter hose in the vehicle means a damaged hose becomes a quick swap instead of a lost day, a second trip and an unhappy customer.

For busy plumbing and drainage businesses, a spare hose is a small investment that protects your schedule and your reputation.
