Question: What is the difference between my unloader Valve and my safety valve?

Unsure of the difference between your unloader valve and safety valve? And what their functions are??

We do get calls from clients with pressure issues and some times we as them to test or check their unloader valves and they are some times unsure what valve is which on their water jetter! But have no fear allow us to quickly explain the difference between the two and what the main functions of these two valves are.

  1. Unloader Valve:
    • The unloader valve serves to regulate pressure within the system. Achieving the desired pressure involves adjusting the spring and valve seat to increase pressure until the specified level is reached.
  2. Function of the Unloader Valve:
    • The primary role of the unloader valve is to control the maximum pressure transmitted through the pump. When this pressure threshold is reached, the unloader valve redirects excess pressure, either bypassing it or circulating it back to the water supply tank via a low-pressure line. This circulation through the tank occurs when the pump is inactive.
  3. Safety Valve (Dump Valve):
    • The safety valve, also known as a high-pressure relief or “Dump valve,” acts as a protective measure for the pump in case of system overpressure. .
  4. Function of the Safety Valve:
    • In the event of over pressure, the safety valve safeguards the pump by diverting excessive pressure to the atmosphere or the ground, preventing potential damage to the system. In contrast to earlier models that utilized one-time-use “Bust discs,” modern safety valves offer a more sustainable solution as they don’t require replacement after each use.

Summary:
This blog post addresses the common confusion between the unloader valve and safety valve in water jetters, providing clarity on their differences and functions. The unloader valve is responsible for regulating pressure within the system, adjusting spring and valve settings to achieve desired pressure levels and redirecting excess pressure back to the water supply tank when necessary. On the other hand, the safety valve, also known as a dump valve, acts as a protective measure in case of system overpressure by diverting excessive pressure to the atmosphere or ground, preventing potential damage to the pump. The post emphasizes the importance of understanding these valves to troubleshoot pressure issues effectively.
